PTFE (Teflon) is a polymer that is highly resistant to solvents of every kind. It is used in precision engineering because of specific mechanical properties combined with its lightness.
With excellent electrical insulation and very good heat resistance (up to around 260–300 °C), PTFE is increasingly used in precision engineering for its homogeneity, which makes it a highly stable material.
In milling, PTFE requires very sharp cutting edges run at high speed (around 9,000 rpm) with a positive rake. Chips are the only real problem with a material that otherwise lends itself very well to precision machining and cuts relatively easily.
Finishing should be carried out with the cutter at high speed but with shallow cuts, because PTFE tends to chip easily. It is used for gears and mechanical parts thanks to its stability and lightness, allowing components with low friction and minimal inertia. In electronics, too, PTFE is used for small spacers and insulating elements, thanks to its complete lack of electrical conductivity.
TMG carries out precision engineering work on PTFE bars of various diameters for turning, and on PTFE blocks and plates for milling.
