The early origins of CNC precision engineering

The Italian tradition in CNC precision engineering has distant but very noble origins.

TMG is an Italian company working in CNC precision engineering, where CNC means numerically controlled machines. These machines carry out precision machining by moving the tool along three or more axes (X, Y and Z coordinates) under computer control, so they can work with far greater precision than traditional mechanical technology.

Although CNC precision engineering is a highly technological sector, TMG carries in its company spirit the whole history of Italian precision engineering, a history going back centuries. Before the computer, precision work was done by master craftsmen, who had only a few mechanical aids to raise production standards. And even if we cannot really call it precision engineering, the techniques the Romans used to build the machines for constructing roads and aqueducts were already aimed at the highest possible quality. With these early, rudimentary machines driven by winches and pulleys, Italian engineering began to make its way across the known world, from northern Europe to Africa, admired for the finish of its simple wooden gears.
