Precision engineering is the branch of mechanical engineering that produces components for machinery in the industrial, agricultural and medical sectors.
One of the machines used to build and maintain such machinery is the lathe.
Its history is very old: there are traces of it in prehistory, when it was used to make pots.
Over the centuries it has of course been perfected, and today there are many types, specialised by kind of production.
The most advanced form of the lathe in precision engineering is the numerically controlled lathe, also known as the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathe.
It is a machine controlled entirely by a computer, into which the parameters of the part to be produced are entered. The machine’s elements move fully automatically, and during machining the computer receives signals from sensors that allow it to monitor that the job is running correctly. If, for any reason (such as tool wear), the sensors detect anomalies in the part, the computer makes the necessary corrections on the fly. The precision of parts produced on this machine is measured in hundredths or thousandths of a millimetre.
