Precision engineering (also known as fine mechanics) is an engineering discipline concerned with the design and construction of small, precise machines and components, often including measuring instruments and control devices of various kinds. It is applied in many fields, for example industry, commercial buildings, domestic heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, and the installation and servicing of equipment in large public buildings.
HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) is one of the sectors that relies most on precision components, from valves and fittings to control devices, in projects that vary widely in size and complexity.
Applications of precision engineering include:
- Central heating systems;
- Climate control equipment;
- Plastics processing;
- Temperature control systems;
- Medical ultrasound equipment;
- Ventilation systems;
- Milling operations;
- Glass processing and production;
- Mechanical systems;
- Machining of alloys such as Hastelloy and other metals such as cobalt alloys and aluminium;
- Geothermal energy generation;
- Solar panel manufacturing;
- Ceramics processing.
