Setting up and fine-tuning sliding-headstock CNC lathes

Setting up sliding-headstock CNC lathes requires expertise not only in the adjustments needed, but also in the component that is to be machined.

The component is analysed during the planning phase, when the machine’s movement instructions are set in the software. Sliding-headstock CNC lathes are highly advanced machines that can adjust themselves automatically along certain production routes; even so, some machining characteristics must be defined when the component goes into the machine.

After defining the production requirements – the type of cut (longitudinal turning, profiling, etc.) and the method (roughing or finishing) – the component’s material and structure must be analysed.

Sliding-headstock CNC lathes work at high speeds, so it is good practice to define in advance everything relating to the number of tool changes, perhaps using a turret, and to the bar feeder, so that machining can make the most of the technical features of these CNC machines.
