Precision CNC machining: even the Earth’s motion must be considered for cutting feed

Software for precision CNC machining allows the lathe to be calibrated to eliminate any oscillation of the part. Even very small external forces can affect the stability of the bar.

In precision CNC machining, environmental factors are not limited to the temperature and vibration of the lathe. Physics reminds us that even the Earth’s rotation produces a force – the Coriolis effect – although at the scale of a machine tool it is extremely small, and far smaller than the effects of vibration, heat and material inconsistencies. The point is that, at high cutting speeds and very tight tolerances, every source of disturbance has to be understood and controlled.

Dimensional control is one of the key parameters in precision CNC machining, along with the strength of the part. Making sure the bar is correctly centred and is not affected by external forces (lathe vibration, or oscillations due to inconsistencies in the material) makes it possible to produce parts that are absolutely identical to the sample defined in the CAD design phase.
