CNC lathe operator: who they are and what they do in a turning shop

torneria meccanica

The lathe operator is the worker who runs the lathe in a turning shop: essentially, they carry out machining on this machine tool, which is used very frequently in industry. Turning is a production process in which the workpiece rotates on itself while excess material is removed. The cutting tool that does the machining, on the other hand, does not rotate.

There are four types of lathe: manual, semi-automatic, automatic and computer numerically controlled. The one we are interested in is the last: with it, the lathe operator can carry out CNC machining. In this case the operator enters the instructions from the technical sheet they are given into the machine, loads the material and sets up the tools.

And that’s not all: the CNC lathe operator starts the machining, supervises the process and must step in if it needs changes, adjustments or repositioning of the material. Once everything is finished, the operator removes the part and finishes it, removing any burrs. At the end of the first operation, the lathe operator checks the quality of the part and passes it on to the next stage, reporting any defects found.

CNC lathe operator: all their tasks

CNC machining places important responsibilities on the lathe operator, who must first load the program into the CNC machine, then set up the machine tool and load the material.

After that, they must supervise the machining, step in in case of malfunctions, faults or incorrect machining, finish the machined part and carry out a quality check, and finally keep the CNC machines running with minor maintenance.
