Turning work: what it is and who needs it

Lavori di tornitura

A turning shop carries out machining on metals – usually steel, stainless steel, aluminium and brass – in many shapes and sizes. Turning work is mainly done on round, hexagonal and other bar stock.

A turning shop in Veneto houses various machines specialised in small metal parts, such as milling machines and CNC machines. The operations usually carried out in a turning shop include turning, milling, grinding, thread rolling, knurling and broaching.

Specifically, turning removes excess material in the form of chips, leaving the metal part technically “clean” and ready to be used. But how does turning work? The workpiece is set in rotation while a wedge-shaped cutting tool moves along a straight path at a constant, preset cutting speed.

In the past this kind of machining was done on engine lathes, which accounted for more than 60% of all machine tools. Today we have moved to much more advanced models that allow the movements to be programmed precisely: numerically controlled machines, known as CNC, on which machining cycles can be programmed to automate and speed up the process.
