The numerically controlled lathe, also called a CNC lathe (Computer Numerical Control), is a much more advanced, innovative and productive form of the traditional lathe.
For those who don’t know, the lathe is used in industry to machine a rotating solid, removing chips through turning. Unlike a manual lathe, a CNC lathe works by computerised automation and achieves high quality standards.
CNC lathes: the operations
The operations possible on a CNC lathe are very different from those on a manual lathe. In general, CNC turning allows standardised, simplified turning. CNC lathes are used today to make pins, pistons, table legs, cylinders and other parts that require rotational machining.
Types of CNC lathe
Different types of CNC lathe are used depending on technology, construction and purpose. In particular, a lathe can be:
- engine (centre) lathe;
- facing lathe;
- vertical lathe;
- turret lathe;
- multitasking lathe;
- twin-spindle lathe.
Lathes also differ depending on whether they are used for wood or ceramics. However, because of their flexibility, versatility and ability to machine the finest details, most companies today use CNC lathes. See our CNC lathes.
