How a high-precision mechanical part is made

CNC machines make it possible to produce high-precision mechanical parts with high repeatability, minimising human error and increasing production efficiency. However, the machining program must be accurate and the CNC machine must be properly set up and maintained to achieve the best results.

The 5 stages of making a high-precision mechanical part

Producing precision parts on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines involves several stages:

  • Drawing the part: before machining begins, the part must be drawn using mechanical design software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks. The drawing must be accurate and specify all tolerances and characteristics of the part.
  • Programming the machining: once the part has been drawn, the machining is programmed using CNC programming tools such as G-code or Heidenhain. Programming tells the CNC system which operations to perform and which tools to use.
  • Setting up the CNC machine: before machining, the machine must be set up by loading the program, selecting the required tools and fixtures and checking that the machine is in good condition.
  • Machining: once the CNC machine is ready, the part can be machined. The CNC system carries out the operations defined in the precision machining program using the selected tools and fixtures.
  • Quality control: once machining is complete, the part undergoes quality checks to verify that it meets the required specifications. If there are defects or imperfections, it can undergo further finishing or rework.
